The Night Before Doomsday:

~*~ An Excerpt:

In Genesis 6:2, “The sons of God saw that the daughters of men were fair; and they took wives for themselves from those who were pleasing to them.”

Azazel was a leader of the Grigori, the angels sent to Earth to teach Mankind after the oust from Eden, how to survive in a less hospitable environment. Nine-tenths of the Grigori fell from Grace, but was it love or lust?

This novella presents the Grigori’s tale in first person from Azazel’s point of view–his struggle against temptation while he watches his brothers sin, one-by-one.

Excerpt:

One spring night I picked my way down a slippery path and found Ruth bathing in a moonlit lake. The sight took my breath away, and the song taking shape in my mind fled.

“Golden Azazel descends to his humble servant.”  Ruth twined her arms above her head, her wet, succulent breasts gleaming in the moonlight.

She forged into shallower water. Excellent night vision bared what the lake would have hidden.  The dark curls at her mound drew my gaze.

I averted my eyes. “I’ll leave you to your peaceful ablutions,” but anticipation rooted my feet to the sand.  She’ll come to me…I was certain.  I turned, placing my wings between me and temptation.

“Ho, Azazel!”

I angled my body so that I could see her.  Beckoning, she strode through the lake, shedding her mantle of water to stand naked on the beach.  Moonlight traced lush curves and the ivory globes of her breasts.  I could almost taste the rosy, pebbled nipples.  Wet hair streamed to her small waist.  My breath hitched.  My heart raced, pumping blood to the shaft tenting my robe.  Guilt plucked at my nerves, but I couldn’t look away.

Magdalene waited for me.  I should leave before trouble closed the distance between us.  My feet refused to move.  Enchanted, I stared at the feline huntress.  I might have conceived this sensual work of art, my own hands molding from river clay that perfect feminine shape.  A thudding awareness of the power she’d been born with, and that lust had given her, held me prisoner.  Then Magdalene’s face flashed before my eyes, turning me toward home.

Deep, throaty laughter mocked me.  “You’re afraid of me, Mighty Archangel.”

I spun to face her. “I am not afraid of you, Ruth.”

“Oh?” Her arms glided around my shoulders, her fingers massaging tense muscles.

She snuggled her face against my wings, her hands stroking the tender underside.  She must know that caressing my wings fired lust.  Which of my brothers was Ruth’s lover?

“Bad Ruth,” she purred, “Azazel is a married man.”

I held her back from me.  “I’m not a man. I’m an angel.”

“A fallen angel.”

Shame and anger jerked me free of her hot embrace.  “Mind your tongue.”

She teased my nose with a feather that had fallen from my wing.  “You committed the Original Sin.”

“The Original Sin was Disobedience.”

Her eyebrows flickered, her expression mocking.  “Did you not disobey when you took Magdalene into your bed?”

The truth tore a gasp from me.  Angels are the Word made manifest.  The Word no longer spoke in me.  I had betrayed divine trust.

She rubbed her arms.  “Your eyes burn my skin.  I’ve made you angry.”  With her hand, she traced my hipbone, her fingers then slid across my thigh.

Recently I read a book for review which also was kind of a biblical fantasy. This genre was new to me, and since it was written so well, I actually loved it. Now, after reading a Novella by Linda Nightingale called The Night Before Doomsday, it has made me a believer…

The Grigori were Angels sent down from Heaven after Adam and Eve were thrown out of Eden. God feared his children would not survive, and wanted them to have someone to train them in their new life, and overcoming the elements. He felt they needed to learn all the trades needed to survive: hunting, cooking, sewing, and caring for themselves.

The Grigori were called the Watchers. Each Angel has been given a job as a teacher. Azazel is the teacher of women, teaching the art of makeup with mirrors and seduction. The women are young, and flirt with the angels. Azazel realizes slowly that many of his friends have taken these women and have now fallen. His close quarters with them daily make it hard for him to not also have these stirrings and he fights hard to not succumb.

Eve did it for Adam with the serpent and the apple, Azazel falls for the gentlest of them all Magdalene. With her he makes a home, calls her wife and is happy until  Ruth and her wicked ways seduce him. This story is exciting, sad, and hopeful. There is so much more to read and witness as you remember your basic Bible. Remember everyone always is responsible for their actions and everyone has to pay the piper.

Linda Nightingale has written story that will spellbind you. It has everything: love, death, betrayal and is action packed. The rains will come, forty days and nights. Who knows Gods plan? Very good read!

Azazel is a fallen angel; he once was the leader of the angels sent to earth to teach mankind after their exile from Eden. How can such an exalted creature fall from Grace? Azazel feels his story should be told from the beginning, so he sits down and writes it. Night Before Doomsday is his account, told in his own words, of how he and the other Grigori came to earth and how they all fell.

While Night Before Doomsday is a short story, 29 pages worth, it manages to pack a pretty good punch. The author tells us in her forward that this is not intended to be a religious story, but a new take on an old story. We do meet Adam and Eve, even Noah is there, and although the story has biblical references we will all recognize, I agree with the author, this is not a religious story. I read it more as a tragedy, a cautionary tale of those who were truly good and how even they can be tempted and swayed from their path.

I’m not sure how she did it, but Ms. Nightingale managed to put so much into this short story that I actually felt like I had read a full length novel when I was done. There was romance, there was betrayal, there was violence and there was even a little bit of sex. I’m not ashamed to admit that a time or two there may even have been a tear or two in my eyes. It didn’t take me long to read this story, I would guess no longer than a hour, but it stayed with me for quite a while afterwards. I’m not a big fan of the short story, I get frustrated because they are over so soon but this one was well worth reading, and I actually felt satisfied when I was done.
